How To Use Your KetoBM Meter
FAQ
Optimal nutritional ketosis is between 1.0 and 2.0 mmol/L and is usually the goal for most people. For more information and explanation of your readings, click here
If majority of test strips that came with the kit give you E02 errors, please contact customer support and describe your issue. You are likely doing everything correctly and received a faulty meter. Reach out to us for a replacement. Do not discard the test strips that errored out as they should work once you receive a replacement (if strips didn’t have blood applied to them yet).
If you are getting E02 errors sporadically, there might be a contaminant getting into the blood port window on the test strip (where blood is applied). If you wash your hands or use alcohol swabs, please make sure you dry your hands completely before handling the strips.
Handle the test strips by holding them either in the middle or on the end opposite the blood application window. If you are getting sporadic E02 errors, contact support with how many strips have failed you and we will replace them free of charge.
It is unlikely that a reading above 4.0 or “HI” is correct unless you are on an extended fast or taking exogenous ketones. If your readings come out on the high end, the strip is likely miscalibrated. Try using a fresh strip or preferably a strip from a new/unopened vial. If results persist, please contact support.
These types of at home meters aim to replicate the results of large expensive lab equipment and work on an acceptable variance basis. As you are measuring a trace amount of ketones in your blood at the lower levels (below 1.0 mmol/L), you may see a variance of +/- 0.2 mmol/L on back to back tests, which is normal. Please note that back to back tests may also have a number of variables that may cause a larger variance. If your tests have large unexplained variances in results, please contact support for help.
Many people test first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything when their ketone levels are the lowest of the day. It's important to test consistently and at the same time when comparing results from one day to another. You will notice ketone levels increase after eating a high fat meal or after exercise. You can also test after eating something new to see how it impacts your ketone levels.
It's not unusual to take 2-4 weeks or longer the first time. Experienced keto dieters can reenter ketosis in 1-2 days with fasting and exercise.
